    Okemos, Michigan is named after Chief Okemos. Unlike many Michigan site names, like Alpena, which sounds Indian but is actually an Indian-like construct of Henry Schoolcraft, Okemos was real. He was Oakland County Ojibwe and some Ottawa on his mother’s side. There were rumors he was related to Pontiac.
